Centre County Remains at Low COVID-19 Community Level for Fourth Consecutive Week

Centre County remains at the low community level for COVID-19 for the fourth consecutive week, according the weekly Centers for Disease Control update on Thursday night.

At the low level, the CDC recommends wearing a mask if symptomatic, if an individual has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been exposed to someone who has, and when on public transportation, but does not recommend universal indoor masking in public places.

Statewide, 50 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties are at the low level, one fewer than last week. Sixteen are at the medium level and one, Montour, is at the high level [+1].

Hospitalizations and cases

For a county to be at the low level, it has fewer than 200 new cases per 100,000 people over a seven-day period, with fewer than 10 COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people and less than 10% of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients over the same period.

Centre County had a case rate of 89.91 per 100,000 people, up from 86.8 last week, and 6.3 new COVID admissions, up from 5.6, with 3.6% of inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 inpatients, down from 3.9%.

Mount Nittany Medical Center had seven COVID-19 patients, with none are intensive care or on ventilators, as of its last inpatient dashboard update on Wednesday The patients range in age from 33 to 91. For the week of June 23-26, Mount Nittany has had an average daily COVID inpatient census of 6.8, down from 8.8 the previous week.

As of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s latest weekly update on Wednesday, 1,046 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized statewide, an increase of 23 from a week ago, with 93 in intensive care [-16] and 39 on ventilators [-15].

Centre County added 143 new cases over the last week and a total of 205 including backdated cases, according to DOH data, The county has had a total of 37,898 COVID-19 cases (33,627 confirmed and 4,271 probable) since March 2020.

The county’s seven-day rolling average for new cases is 23.1, down slightly from 23.4 a week ago.

Pennsylvania registered 12,909 new positives over the last week and has a rolling seven-day average of 2,247, up from 2,182 the prior week.

The statewide case total since the start of the pandemic is now 3,006,257.

Deaths

DOH reported one new death attributed to the virus among Centre County residents in the last week, bringing the total to 361.

With 109 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry in the last week, the statewide total is now 45,766.

Positivity rate

Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of June 23-29 was 12.2%, up from 11.5% the previous seven days, according to the DOH early warning monitoring dashboard. The rate was tied for the 29th lowest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The statewide positivity rate was 12.8%, up from 11.8% the previous seven days.

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 96,627 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 118 since June 22, and 14,374 are partially covered [+11]. First booster doses have been administered to 52,683 county residents [+210] and 10,268 have received a second booster [+404].

Among the county’s entire population, 71.3% have received at least one dose, 60.6% are fully vaccinated and 53.4% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 76.7% have received at least one dose, 64.8% are fully vaccinated and 55.6% have received a booster.

Statewide, 79.2% of adults and 69.6% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
