Centre County Stays at Low COVID-19 Community Level, Adds 14 Cases

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the fifth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest weekly update.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level for the second straight week, with the other three at the medium level: Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna .

Community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking and at the medium level masks are recommended only for those with increased risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor masking in places open to the public is recommended.

Centre County was at the high level for the first week of the new metrics and dropped to the medium level on March 3 before moving to low on March 10. At the low level, a community has fewer than 200 new cases per 100,000 people over a seven-day period, with fewer than 10 COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people and less than 10% of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients over the same period.

New Cases

Centre County registered 14 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county’s new cases bring the total to 35,169 (31,226 confirmed and 3,943 probable) since March 2020, according to the state Department of Health. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 11, up from 8.7 a week ago.

Pennsylvania reported more than 1,100 new positives for the second consecutive day after recording 20 consecutive days below 1,000. The 1,178 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,787,687.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 776, up from 603 a week ago.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has two COVID-19 inpatients for the second consecutive day. One is in intensive care [+1] and on a ventilator [+1].

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since July 26. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 410 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 17 fewer than on Thursday, with 59 in intensive care [-5] and 44 on ventilators [-1].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 347.

With 13 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,404.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates, and one each among staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

Inmate and staff vaccination data was not available on Friday.

Vaccinations

As of Friday morning, 94,962 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 45 since Thursday, and 14,226 are partially covered. Booster doses have been administered to 50,052 county residents [+47].

Among the county’s entire population, 70% have received at least one dose, 59.5% are fully vaccinated and 51.4% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.3% have received at least one dose, 63.6% are fully vaccinated and 54.1% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.3% of adults and 67.8% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
