Centre County Stays at Low COVID-19 Community Level for 6th Consecutive Week

Centre County remains at the low community level for COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive week, according the weekly Centers for Disease Control update on Thursday night.

At the low level, the CDC recommends wearing a mask if symptomatic, if an individual has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been exposed to someone who has, and when on public transportation, but does not recommend universal indoor masking in public places.

Statewide, 40 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties are at the low level, one fewer than last week. Twenty-four are at the medium level and three are at the high level.

Hospitalizations and cases

For a county to be at the low level, it has fewer than 200 new cases per 100,000 people over a seven-day period, with fewer than 10 COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people and less than 10% of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients over the same period.

Centre County had a case rate of 128.71 per 100,000 people, down from 130.55 last week, and 4.9 new COVID admissions, down from 7, with 4% of inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 inpatients, down from 4.4%.

Mount Nittany Medical Center had seven COVID-19 patients on Friday, with none are intensive care or on ventilators, according to the hospital’s inpatient dashboard. The patients range in age from 36 to 85. For the week of July 9-15, Mount Nittany has had an average daily COVID inpatient census of 7.3, down from 8.8 the previous week.

As of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s latest weekly update on Wednesday, 1,036 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized statewide, a decrease of 18 from a week ago, with 130 in intensive care [+31] and 48 on ventilators [-7].

Centre County added 162 new cases over the last week and a total of 209 including backdated cases, according to DOH data, The county has had a total of 38,260 COVID-19 cases (33,959 confirmed and 4,301 probable) since March 2020.

The county’s seven-day rolling average for new cases is 29, up from 26.4 a week ago.

Pennsylvania registered 19,367 new positives over the last week and has a rolling seven-day average of 2,766.7, up from 2,169.9 the prior week.

The statewide case total since the start of the pandemic is now 3,038,076.

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents in the last week and removed one from the county’s tally, bringing the total to 360.

With 128 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry in the last week, the statewide total is now 45,949.

Positivity rate

Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of July 6-12 was 13.8%, down from 15.6% the previous seven days, according to the DOH early warning monitoring dashboard. The rate was tied for the 27th lowest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The statewide positivity rate was 15.3%, up from 14% the previous seven days.

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 96,842 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 158 since July 6, and 14,349 are partially covered [-40]. First booster doses have been administered to 52,965 county residents [+168] and 10,851 have received a second booster [+422].

Among the county’s entire population, 71.5% have received at least one dose, 60.8% are fully vaccinated and 53.6% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 76.8% have received at least one dose, 64.9% are fully vaccinated and 55.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 79.3% of adults and 69.8% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
