Death and the Afterlife in the Ancient World

Learn about ancient burial rites, stories of gods and heroes of the underworld, ideas about the afterlife, and more at our workshop on Death and the Afterlife in the Ancient World, held Saturday, February 28th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in Room 233B of the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State campus. Professors from Penn State’s Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies will talk about topics including stories of the Greek gods Hades and Persephone and the Mesopotamian goddess Inanna; the burial rites and afterlife beliefs of the ancient Egyptians; and early Jewish and Christian ideas about the afterlife. Participants will also be able to learn about topics such as curse tablets, mummification, grave goods and inscriptions, funerary monuments, and more through hands-on activities. Food and drinks will be provided.
