Adler Lee Gabel passed on August 29, 2026, in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, at the age of 24.
He was born on September 22, 2001, in State College, Pennsylvania, and spent most his life rooted in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. He also lived in Wilkes-Barre, Scranton and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to play U16 AAA hockey, then returning back to Boalsburg, where he played for State College High School hockey.
Adler was the son of Sandra Hillard Gabel and Paul C. Gabel, and the brother of Sydney Gabel. He was also cherished by his grandmother, Nancy Hillard and by a large extended family that included his uncles Michael Hillard, Joe Gabel, and John Gabel, as well as his aunt Mary Ann Wagner. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronald “Lee” Hillard, grandparents Jack and Barbara Gabel, and his aunts Maura Gabel and Alice Ketcham.
Adler graduated from the State College Area High School in 2020 and went on to attend Penn State University, where he studied Environmental Systems Engineering and graduated in December 2025.
Professionally, Adler worked for Stahl Scheaffer Engineering, where he served as an intern for many years, then hired as a Construction Inspector in January 2026.
Outside of work and school, Adler made time for the activities that brought him joy. He loved golf, hockey, and hunting. He also treasured being around his friends and making them laugh, something he did often and naturally. Adler had a gift for lifting the mood in a room, which made him someone people wanted to be around.
His connection to hockey extended beyond recreation, through teams that included, State College Icers, Altoona Mustangs, Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, and attended USA Hockey National Development Camp. That experience reflected his dedication, talent, and commitment to the sport.
Adler’s life, though far too brief, was marked by meaningful relationships, personal achievement, and a steady spirit that touched many. He will be remembered for his bright mind, his kind heart, and the laughter he shared so freely. In State College and beyond, those who knew Adler will carry forward the memory of a young man whose presence was both steady and uplifting, and whose impact will not be forgotten.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026 from 3pm to 5:30pm at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College. A funeral service will follow at 5:30pm with Pastor Joe Rose officiating.
