Audrey Jean Butler, 84, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024. She left us softly and entered into the arms of her Savior, surrounded by family—those she called “my people”—at her home on Callawassie Island, SC.
Audrey was born on September 27, 1939, in mountaintop Snow Shoe, PA, to Elaine Ellen Benton Hall and William Henry “Bill” Hall. She was one of four siblings, and is survived by her brothers, Daniel W. Hall, William H. “Bill” Hall, Jr. and her sister Sandra Harris. Also surviving is her husband E. Steward Butler, and her four children: E. Steward Butler, Jr. and his wife Patrice of Quakertown, PA, Beth Kephart and her husband Francis of Florence, SC, Christopher Butler and his wife Maureen of Beaufort, SC, and Sharon Mansell and her husband Mark of Seabrook, SC.
Audrey has also left her mark by spending time with a sprawling—and ever-expanding—band of 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren who knew her primarily as “Mimi” or “Gram.”
Until the end, Audrey enjoyed her church family and was a joy to be around, whether that meant sharing a cup of coffee (she’d almost never turn down a mug of it), taking her beloved and rotund dog Arnie for a walk, or playing a game of tennis.
She filled many roles throughout her life, including attending business school, working at the family business and even as a high school women’s basketball coach at one point. But among her favorite titles was as a devoted wife to Steward, supporting him in his business ventures and beyond. Their 64th wedding anniversary fell just a few days before she passed. She’ll be remembered with deep affection for how she loved her family. Her brimming cookie jar, perfectly fluffy pancakes, and warm blue eyes will forever be legendary.
A private graveside service will be held Friday, June 7, 2024, at Snow Shoe Church of Christ at 11:00am.
A celebration of life will follow at 1pm at the Hall family camp.
