Charles Allen “Chuck” Smith, of Boalsburg and lately the Village at Penn State, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on February 26, 2025, at the age of 90 in State College, PA.

Born on January 24, 1935, in Aaronsburg, PA, he was the son of Charles A. Smith and Lena K. Hosterman. He is survived by his brother, Gerald Smith of Pleasant Gap. A proud graduate of East Penns Valley High School, Charles went on to attend Penn State University, where his passion for music led him to play in the Blue Band. His dedication to the university remained a constant throughout his life, and he could often be found cheering on the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium, where he also served as the scoreboard operator for many years.

Following his education, Charles served his country in the United States Air Force, the Air Force Reserves and the Air National Guard where he honed his skills as an analyst. His military position took him overseas and he enjoyed reminiscing about those experiences. His career path and national service led him to HRB Singer where he spent time as a defense contractor at the Pentagon. Most of his professional career was spent at Penn State where his expertise culminated in his role as the first director of computer security at the University.

On February 20, 1955, Charles married the love of his life, Miriam R. Mark, who survives him, and together they shared 70 years together in a life filled with joy and family. They were blessed with four daughters: Lucinda Bringman (Daniel), Judy Coup (Richard), Darcy Midtvedt, and Sharon Smith DelSignore. His role as a grandfather to Mark Bringman, Ruth Bringman Gardner, Sarah Bringman Smith, Christopher Coup, Charles Coup, Aaron Coup, Michael Midtvedt, Chelsea Midtvedt, Angela DelSignore Romeo, Stephany DelSignore, and Janelle DelSignore Percey, was one of his greatest joys. He was blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren. Charles’ grandchildren and their children will remember him for playing cribbage with him and sharing his wisdom, gentle guidance, and the unconditional love he so freely gave.

Beyond his family and career, Charles was an active member of his community. He played with the Little German Band for many years. He was a proud member of the Old Fort Masonic Lodge and the State College Elks Lodge. His hobbies, including golf and bowling, were more than pastimes; they were opportunities for Charles to forge lasting friendships and share laughter and camaraderie with those around him. He was a faithful member of Pine Hall Lutheran Church.

While his family mourns his loss, they take comfort in knowing that his was a life well-lived, full of faith, purpose, love, and the joy of shared experiences.

Services will be on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 2 pm at Pine Hall Lutheran Church, 1760 West College Ave State College, led by the Rev. Ted Williams. Graveside services will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Charles to Pine Hall Lutheran Church.
