Joseph E. (Joe) Thal, 87 of Pleasant Gap, PA passed away at home on Saturday, July 9, 2022. Joe was born in Bellefonte, Pa on November 7, 1934. He was the son of the late Lawrence “Frenchie” Thal, Sr. and Marie Smead Thal. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence “Sonny” Thal, Jr. and Philip Thal and by his sister Gertrude McGowan. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joanne B. Thal. He is survived by his daughter Mary Jo Livergood (Larry) of Pleasant Gap and Moshannon. He is also survived by several nephews, his special friend Francis Shook of Spring Mills, and his beloved grand-dog Zoey. He was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church of Pleasant Gap.
He attended Bellefonte High School and early in his life, he worked for Torsell Buick and Capers Buick in State College. He retired from Penn State Housing and Food Services in December 1994.
Joe enjoyed attending public auctions to collect milk bottles, Griswald items, and fire company memorabilia, He was a life member of the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, where he served in various capacities over the years. He was a life member of the Central District Volunteer Firemen’s Association, where he served on various committees and was named Honorary Past President in 2012. He was a life member of the Bellefonte Elks Lodge No. 1094. He was a life member of the Centre County Fire Police Association and a member of the Firefighter’s Association of the State of Pennsylvania. Earlier in life, he was a member of the Undine Fire Company in Bellefonte and marched with their marching unit.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, July 15, 2022 from 6:00 P. M. – 8:00 P. M. at The Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home and Cremation Service Inc., 201 Spring St., Milesburg and on Saturday, July 16, 2022 from 10:00 A. M. – 11:00 A. M. time of the funeral services with Deacon Thomas E. Boldin and Pastor Michael Covalt, officiating. Burial will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, in Pleasant Gap. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, 475 Robinson Lane, Pleasant Gap, PA 16823 or to Saint John’s Catholic School, 116 E. Bishop Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823. Facial covering is optional.
