Katherine “Kay” Emigh, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and pioneer in the toy retail industry, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 4, 2024. Born on May 21, 1948, in Fayette County, Kay grew up in Uniontown, PA, and graduated from St. John’s High School in 1966. She pursued her passion for early education at Penn State University, earning her degree in 1969.
Kay began her career as a dedicated second-grade teacher in Port Matilda, where she inspired young minds for eleven years. In 1982, Kay and her husband, Larry Emigh, embarked on a new adventure by purchasing Growing Tree Toys. Kay owned and operated the toy store for 37 years, driven by her belief that children learn through play. She was committed to providing parents with unique, high-quality toys that were both fun and meaningful.
Her love for the toy store and her joy in watching children play led her to create Kidtivities, special summer activities that became a part of community summers. Kay’s influence extended beyond her store as she became one of the founding members of ASTRA, the American Specialty Toy Retailer Association, advocating for healthy, quality play materials with high play value.
Kay was also deeply passionate about downtown State College. As an active member of the Downtown Improvement District, she worked tirelessly to ensure that downtown offered options for families, reflecting her dedication to community improvement.
In her personal life, Kay cherished moments spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, and found great pleasure in reading a good book on the beach. She loved keeping traditions alive. Whether it was hiding Easter eggs or baking Christmas cookies with the grandkids, she was always great at pulling the family together.
Kay is survived by her loving husband, Larry Emigh; her son, Jon Emigh and his wife Kim Emigh; her daughter, Jen Emigh and her partner Drew Lehnerd; her sisters, Debby Kappel and Ann Sawchak; and her brother, Michael Bradley. Kay was predeceased by her siblings, Tricia McClure and Patrick Bradley. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Adelyn, Brighton, and Halsten, who she loved deeply.
Kay’s legacy of love, education, and community spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation will be from 11 am – 12 pm, Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St, State College.
