Marietta C. Dunmire, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 82, in State College, Pennsylvania. Born on May 15, 1942, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late William E. Briar and Helen E. Schilling. She was fostered at an early age and was raised by Graybill and Edith Masemore, with foster brother Dr Ira Grabill Masemore, in Mattawana, all deceased. Marietta’s life was a testament to the power of warmth and family, traits that endeared her to all who knew her.
Her working career began in the State College Area School district as a teacher’s aide. She was later employed with the Penn State University, working over 25 years, retiring from the Payroll Department.
In 1959, Marietta married George C. Dunmire, who predeceased her. Together, they raised a loving family of five children: Scott L. (Janine) of Harrisburg, Gary D. (Tammy) of Bellefonte, Cynthia S. Hanscom of Florida, Dohn A. of Bellefonte, and Connie J. Welch (William) of Lewistown. Her role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, guiding her children with a gentle hand and an open heart. Marietta’s legacy continues through her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each a reflection of her love and kindness.
Marietta was one of eight siblings, and she is fondly remembered by her surviving sisters, Estella “Sis” Smith, Ruth Findley, DeAnna “Deb” Marker, and Helen “Sue” Bratton, as well as her brother, Ronald Briar. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she looked forward to every family gathering, where her presence was a source of joy and comfort.
A lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, Marietta’s enthusiasm for Penn State University sports was legendary. She was an avid fan, attending countless football, hockey, and women’s basketball games.
Marietta’s interests extended beyond the bleachers; her home was a welcoming haven where friends and family were always greeted with a smile. She had an innate ability to make everyone feel at home, and her kindness was a gentle force that drew people together.
Those who knew Marietta were touched by her loving nature. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, kindness, and friendship. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we take solace in the countless memories and the enduring impact she has left on our hearts.
