Beverly Ann Smith, 81, of Port Matilda passed away on July 1, 2017, at Hearthside Nursing Home in State College. Born on September 15, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Jesse W. and Ethel Jane (Harpster) Robinson. She was married on March 3, 1956, to Gerald Smith, who preceded her in death. She was a 1953 graduate of Worth Township High School in Port Matilda. Beverly is survived by two children: Lisa Bitner of Bellefonte and Michael (Lisa) Smith of Richlands, North Carolina. Also surviving are two brothers: Jay Robinson of State College and Donald (Linda) Robinson of Bellefonte. Surviving sisters are Joanne Jenkins of North Huntingdon, Pa; Janie (David) Taylor of Winchester, VA; and Judy (Kim) Westley of Port Matilda. Seven grandchildren who survive include Aaron Bitner, Arick Bitner, Ashley Bitner, Kyle Smith, Jeffery Smith, Lacy Turnbaugh, and Josephine Turnbaugh. Also surviving are eleven great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Beverly was preceded in death by her sister Donna Walters and infant brother Ronald.
Beverly was a beloved resident of the Port Matilda community and the recipient of the WTAJ Award for Community Service. She was a very active member of the Port Matilda United Methodist Church, where for many years she was the Choir Director of both the Adult and Children’s choirs. She was recognized for her work in producing annual Christmas cantatas. She served several years as an elementary school aide and also worked for several years as a crossing guard for the school. Beverly was an avid sports fan and loved to attend baseball games to watch her grandchildren play. She was also a faithful fan of Penn State football games. She and her mother, who was her best friend, often watched those games together on TV. Steeler football games were also a major part of their viewing habits.
A public memorial service will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Port Matilda United Methodist Church with lay minister Donna Snyder presiding. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Port Matilda United Methodist Church at 209 S.
