Mrs. Barnes was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, on September 17, 1922, and was married for over 67 years to the late William T. Barnes. She graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1944 with a degree in home economics, and was initially employed as a dietitian at Cook County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where she met her future husband.

After completion of her husband's residency in Chicago, the couple moved to Danville, Pennsylvania, where Dr. Barnes was a physician at Geisinger Medical Center. They lived in Danville until 1975 (with the exception of two years during which they resided in Toronto, Ontario), at which time they moved to State College.

In addition to her career as a dietitian in Chicago, Mrs. Barnes served for several years as a dietitian at a senior living facility in the Sunbury, Pennsylvania area. She also conducted an antique refinishing business for a number of years while in Danville. While in Danville, Mrs. Barnes served as a member of the board of directors of the Danville Area School District.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by her sons W. Stephen Barnes (Gayle) of State College and Joseph J. Barnes (Sandra) of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and her daughter, Carey B. Wheeler (Ray) of Raleigh, North Carolina, seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Another grandson, Christopher Warren Barnes, predeceased Mrs. Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dorothy Jones Barnes and Christopher Warren Barnes Scholarship, College of Human Development, Penn State University, University Park, PA 16802.
