Edgar W. Sommers, Jr. 83, of Boalsburg, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, at his home.
He was born April 30, 1929, in Pleasant Gap, a son of the late Edgar W. Sommers Sr. and Carrie Gettig Sommers.
During basic training at Fort Rucker, AL; he met his future wife Barbara Dykes they were married January 17, 1953. Mrs. Sommers survives at home.
Edgar was a graduate of Bellefonte High School with the class of 1946, where he was a standout baseball player.
During the Korean War, he served two years in the 966th Engineer Field Maintenance Company. He earned the rank of Corporal and was stationed in Kornwestheim, Germany. Mr. Sommers graduated from Williamsport Community College with a Tool and Die certificate. He was employed as the head production engineer at Chemcut Corporation for thirty five years.
Mr. Sommers was an avid golfer and recorded five holes in one. He volunteered at numerous golf tournaments at the Penn State golf courses. His memberships include Mt. Nittany Untied Methodist Church, State College, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1600 at Boalsburg; and the American Legion Post 245, State College.
Surviving along with his wife of fifty nine years, are two daughters, Sheri Martin and her husband Denny and grandsons Ross and Brett Martin and Renee Gummo and her children Kara Vozniak and her husband Matt and T J Biggans and his wife Janice and children Melissa Warner and Candy Whititaker, and great grandchildren, Jake, Nate, Cody, and Mackenzie Vozniak; and one son Scott Sommers and his wife Laura of Boalsburg, and grandchildren Frank Gennaccaro, Carly Dreibelbis and Casey Sommers; and his dog, Miss Lilly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Betty Sommers Walker and her husband Ken, and Dora Sommers Woomer and her husband Bill.
Friends will be received from 6 -8 p. m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, and from 10 – 11 a. m. Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Branch Road, State College. A celebration of life service will follow immediately on Wednesday, at 11:00 a. m. at the church with the Reverend Edward Preston and the Reverend Carl Hill officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
