Frederick R. Smith, 69, of State College departed from this life on Oct. 8, 2009 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Fred was born in Bellefonte on April 30, 1940, the son of Robert P. Smith and Jean H. Sasserman Smith.
Fred was a 1958 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. On Dec. 11, 1964 he married Beverly Joan Wilkins. Fred was a member of Local #520 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union and a retired pipefitter. He worked on various projects around the country including Three Mile Island, Susquehanna, Berwick, and Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plants as well as The Bryce Jordan Center and Beaver Stadium. Fred enjoyed playing golf, riding motorcycles and spending time with his grandchildren.
Fred is survived by two daughters, Jodi L. Smith and husband Mark Konopelski, of Centre Hall and Kristi K. Smith, of State College; one son, Troy D. Smith and wife Angela, of Millheim; and two grandchildren, Lydia K. and Ozbourne A. Smith. Also surviving are one sister, Patricia Stevens, of State College; and two brothers, Kenneth "Buck" Smith and Donald Smith, both of Bellefonte, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. The family encourages friends to take a moment and celebrate his life and memory. Memorial contributions in Fred's memory may be given to Centre Hall PTG, c/o Autism Support Classroom, PO Box 480, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
