Geraldine May Johnson, 87, of State College, died on March 11, 2015, at home.
Born June 1, 1927 in Plainwell, MI, she was the daughter of Harvey and Magdalene Sprunger Hirschy. Geraldine married Melvin Walter Johnson, on April 17, 1954 in her hometown.
In addition to her husband of 60 years, Melvin, she is survived by her daughter, Melanie Raitto and her husband, Jack, of Hollis, NH; son, M. Eric Johnson and his wife, Nancy, of Nashville, TN; 5 grandchildren, Caleb (and wife Catherine) and Andy Raitto, Wesley, Hannah, and Nathan Johnson; brother, Robert Hirschy and wife, Jan, of Wisconsin.
Geraldine was a graduate of Plainwell High School and Hope College, Holland, MI. She later attended the University of Michigan before moving with her husband to Wisconsin.
Geraldine worked as an elementary Music and high school English teacher. She moved with Melvin to West Virginia and later to State College in 1965.
Geraldine loved music and was an excellent cellist. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, and camping. She was a member of State College Alliance Church, where she served for many years as the music coordinator. She also was a driver for the Centre County community ride service.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at State College Alliance Church, 1221 West Whitehall Road, State College 16801, with Reverend Aaron Henning officiating.
