Gladys Ruth Behers Alters, 81, passed away June 24, 2010, at the Sycamore Manor Health Center after a brief illness.
Born in Benner Township, near Bellefonte, Centre County on July 22, 1928, she was the daughter of George Behers and Grace Irene Gettig Behers. She was the widow of Richard Alters, originally of Bellefonte, who passed away in 1990.
Surviving are her three sons and their partners, Daniel L. and Patti Alters, of Cogan Station, Gary W. Alters and Joanne Keenan, of Bloomsburg; and Timothy S. and LouAnn Alters, of Lehman. She is also survived by a sister, Marion Behers Wallace, Beltefonte. Gladys has five grandchildren, Timothy S. Alters, Jr., Diane Mazonis, Jennifer Carlton, Daniel F. Alters, and Michelle Alters; three step-grandchildren, Barry Noll, Deborah Biter, and Mark Noll; three great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Mazonis, Analyse Alters, and Arden Carlton; and two step-great-grandchildren, Caleb Biter and Aubrey Biter. Gladys was predeceased by two brothers, Roy Behers, of Spring Mills and Fred Behers, of Show Low, Ariz.; and three sisters, Louise Corman, Elizabeth McDowell and Gladys' identical twin Mildred Leathers, all of Bellefonte.
Gladys retired from the Chocolate Popcorn Company, Kingston, Pa. many years ago, and maintained a friendship with the family that founded the company. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, baking, bird feeding, but most of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A public visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Wetzler Funeral Service Inc., 206 N. Spring St., Bellefonte. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.
