Joseph F. Wernert Sr., 81, of rural Bellefonte, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at his home.

He was born March 15, 1933 in Philadelphia, a son of the late Joseph Charles Wernert and Olga Marie Rankel.
On August 3, 1957 he married Edith Westphal who survives at home.

Joe honorably served our country in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict from April 28, 1953 to April 13, 1955 earning the rank of Corporal. He also worked as a cook while he was stationed in Germany.
Throughout his life he was a handyman, and a Machinist for Domtar. Joe was a Civil War buff who enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife is one daughter, Edith Binkley (Scott Heimbach) of State College; two sons Joseph F. Wernert Jr. (Carol) of Clarence, Larry Elsesser (Marilyn) of Morrisville; five grandchildren Ed Wernert (Jess), Corey Wernert (Trynnea), Alisha Dann (Ross), Tammy Wissner, Kelly Binkley; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received Saturday, April 5, 2014, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at The Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA 16801. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Internment will be immediately after the service, at Centre County Memorial Park, with full military honors.
