Kenneth H. Hugar, Sr. 87, of Karthaus, passed way on Friday, March 04, 2011 at Mountain Laurel Nursing Home in Clearfield. Born on April 12, 1923, in Frenchville, he was the son of the late James J. and Marie S. Askey Hugar. On August 18, 1946, in Hartleton, he married Helen K. Bingaman, who survives at home.
Ken attended the Keewayden School. In his early years, he worked in the coalmines with his father and uncle. He then went to work in the maintenance department at Piper Aircraft in Quehanna, retiring in 1988.
Ken served in the US Navy during WWII where he earned the rank of Seaman First Class. For he his years of service, he received the American Theatre Metal and the Victory Metal.
Ken was of the Lutheran faith. He drove for the Karthaus Volunteer Fire Company and the Karthaus Ambulance Service for many years. He was a member of the VFW Post 8386 in Frenchville. He was a past member of the Karthaus Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ken will be best known for his ability to fix anything. He was a general handy man.
Ken is survived by his wife, three sons; Kenneth H. Hugar, Jr of Keewayden, Thomas L. Hugar, his wife, Joyce, of Clearfield, Geary L. Hugar, his companion, Connie of Karthaus, two brothers; Calvin Hugar of Driftwood, and Merle J. Hugar of Clearfield. Also surviving are his seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, stepsister Elsie Askey, daughter in-law, Carol Hugar, and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 6-8pm at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W. Sycamore St. Snow Shoe. Burial will be private at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Karthaus Ambulance Service, PO Box 9, Karthaus, PA 16845.
