Laura M. Ertley, 74, of Hublersburg, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 30, 2010. Born on March 18, 1936, in Coleville, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd & Sarah L Justice Gardner. On January 28, 1956, in Winchester, VA, she married Kenneth E. Ertley, who survives at home.
Laura is a 1954 graduate from Howard High School. She worked at Murata Erie, in State College, as a shipping clerk, retiring in 1995 after 32 years of service. She was of the protestant faith.
While attending high school, Laura worked at the Cannery in Centre Hall and helped at her father’s gas station. Laura was known to a lot of people for her ability to help people restart and change for a better life, assisting in self-help groups in Centre County as well as the surrounding counties. She was a mentor to many.
She was an avid antique collector and enjoyed going to auctions. She would always enjoy going to the flea markets, and antique shops. The treasures she would find, she would use to decorate her home. If she couldn’t use the items, she would sell it at her antique shop. Laura would never turn down a long car ride and seeing different parts of the country. She was a wonder wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. All that knew her will truly miss her.
Laura is survived by her husband of 54 years, two daughters; Kimberly S. Young (Dave) & Beth A. Ertley both of Bellefonte, daughter in-law, Cheryl Ertley of Milesburg, three sisters; Shirley Lucas of Howard, Betty Kunes of Blanchard, & Darlene “Sparkle” Witmer of Bellefonte. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Cody Young of Bellefonte and Courtney Ertley of Milesburg.
Along with her parents, Laura was preceded in death by her son, Edward E Ertley who passed away on January 6, 2007 and her sister, Sandra Bartley who passed away on March 25, 2010.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2pm at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Jacksonville with Rev. Nancy Kuhns officiating. Burial will be at Jacksonville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Centre County Woman’s Resource Center, 140 W. Nittany Ave, State College, PA 16801 or to the American diabetes Association, 3544 North Progress Ave/Suite 101 Harrisburg, PA 17110.
