Nancy Spencer King, 72, of State College, PA, formerly of Wallingford, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2011.
Nancy was born July 19, 1939 in Ithaca, NY, the daughter of the Larry and Jean Spencer.
Nancy graduated from Penn State University in the College of Home Economics in 1961. On February 25, 1961, she was married to Charles R. “Chick” King Jr., who survives at home.
Nancy lived in Wallingford for over 40 years where she raised their two children, Susan and Jeff. She took great joy in being actively involved in her children’s lives and helping with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and all sorts of school activities. Early on, she was a constant presence as the neighborhood crossing guard. She also enjoyed countless hours of volunteer work with the local hospital, Meals on Wheels, and served as President of the PTA. She was involved in organizing and teaching classes for adult community education program at the local high school.
In addition to her family, Nancy’s other passion was her catering business, Second Helping Catering, which she ran out of her home for over 35 years. Over the years, she provided thousands of satisfied customers, many of whom became friends, with delicious meals and hors d’oeuvres celebrating many important events in people’s lives.
In recent years, Nancy and Chick enjoyed traveling to see their grandchildren in Michigan and Minnesota, as well as traveling the world including Heli-hiking in the Canadian Rockies, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Italy, Sweden, and Scandinavia. They moved from Wallingford to The Village at Penn State in June 2010, where they rapidly integrated into their new community/family.
Nancy is loved and remembered by her husband, Chick; daughter, Susan (Pat) Carey; son, Dr. Jeff (Wendy) King; grandchildren, Ben and Leah Carey and Alexandra, Morgan, Nick, and Samantha King; brother, David (Sandy) Spencer; brother in law, John (Feather) King; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Nancy will take place on Monday, October 17, 2011 from 2:30 – 4:00 PM in the Dining Room at The Village of Penn State, 260 Lions Hill Road, State College, PA 16803.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be sent to Penn State Office of Development, c/o The College of Health and Human Development, 201 Henderson Building, University Park, PA 16802 and reference, “In memory of Nancy Spencer King.”
