Robert J, “Bob” Flipse died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at his home. The first child of Mildred G. Hunn and Joseph C. Flipse, he was born July 18, 1923, in Topeka, Kansas. On June 24, 1944, he married Margaret Giles at Fort Knox, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on May 10, 2005. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 and held a rank of First Lieutenant at the time of discharge.
Bob received a BS degree from Kansas State University and an MS and PhD from Michigan State University. He joined the faculty at Penn State as assistant professor of Dairy Science in 1950 and advanced to professor in 1966. In 1969, he was appointed assistant dean of Agriculture and assistant director of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1988. The author of more than 90 technical publications in animal reproduction and nutrition, he received the Borden Award for Dairy Research in 1969. His biographical sketches appear in Who’s Who in the East, American Men of Science, Leaders in American Science, and World Who’s Who in Science.
Bob was a member of the University Baptist and Brethren Church and served as its Financial Secretary for 25 years. He was a member of the Harris Township Lions Club for more than 50 years and served as Secretary for more than 30 years. A 50-year veteran of the Boy Scout program, he served as Council Commissioner for the Juniata Valley Council for 32 years and served in numerous other volunteer roles, including 15 years as Wood Badge Training Coordinator for the Northeast Region. He was honored with the Silver Beaver in 1967 and the Silver Antelope in 1982, and Penn State’s Barash Award for Human Service in 1980.
Bob is survived by a sister, Betty Spillner, of Federal Way, Washington, five children, Robert, Barbara, Scott, Phil, and Doug; 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A life celebration service will be held July 18, 2015 at the University Baptist and Brethren Church.
