Samuel S. Ross, of Bellefonte, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, his 83rd birthday, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, College Township. Mom has called, so he's going home now.

Born February 28, 1927, in Pine Hall, State College area, he was a son of the late Thomas Irvin and Mary Ellen (Koch) Ross. He was one of seven children, all who have gone before him.

On July 13, 1946, he married Violet Rosella Horner, who preceded him in death on October 15, 2009 and who he was most ready to join.

Sam faithfully served our country in the U.S. Army from June 11, 1945 until August 1946 during World War II.

Sam had been employed and retired from Penn State University in 1985 from the Applied Research Lab. After retiring from Penn State, he owned and operated the Paradise Hill Driving Range in Bellefonte.

In 1951, Sam and Violet built their own home in Lemont at the foot of the Nittany Mountain, where they raised their family. While in Lemont, Sam coached the Suburban Little League Baseball team and attended the Lemont Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1964, he and his wife moved to Fisherman's Paradise (Bellefonte), where they remained.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of the Black Hawk Riding Club of Oak Hall.

He is survived by his children, Connie (Mike) McCoy and Jerry (Paula) Ross, both of Bellefonte; five grandchildren, Brian Ross, John Houser, Jennifer Lannan, Timberly Ross and Lindsey Ross; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren, most recently little Sammie of Julian and Miss Ainsley Violet of Omaha, NE.

Friends and family will be received from 2:00 PM until the time of the funeral service on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. The funeral will follow at 3:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home with the Reverend Robert Simonsick officiating. Interment will be in Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA.
