Sarah J. Bitner, 92, of Howard, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at her home. Born on January 20, 1932, in Howard, she was the daughter of the late Bernard G. and Mary L. (Hinton) Long. On April 15, 1955, in Howard, she married Christie G. Bitner. Christie passed away on July 7, 2024.
Sarah was a 1950 graduate of Howard High School. She worked as a seamstress of Woolrich Woolen Mills in Howard for 34 years before retiring. She was a member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
Sarah enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, and family time. She was Christie’s travel companion, going for daily drives to Marsh Creek to “check out the deer”. They would jump in the truck and head to Lancaster or to Belleville to do some antiquing. They loved attending Grange Fair and have been doing it for the past 55 years.
Sarah is survived by her two daughters: Wanda J. Nyman and her husband, Mike, of Howard and Karen J. Walk and her husband, Brian, of Port Matilda. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Jared Nyman, Jordan Nyman (Amanda), and Alyssa Barlup (Dan); five great grandchildren: Jack Nyman, Hank Nyman, Conner Nyman, Morgan Nyman, and Ava Barlup; many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, Sarah was preceded in death by six brothers: W. Ralph Long, Cameron Long, George Long, Samuel Long, Robert Long, and David Long; and three sisters: Marjorie Long, Alice Maxine Wagner, and Dorothy Schenk. Sarah was the last of her generation.
Following Sarah’s wishes, all services will be private. She will be laid to rest next to Christie in Schenck’s Cemetery, Howard Twp.
