For the first time since August of 2020, Penn State athletics reported no COVID-19 positive test results following its latest round of testing from May 8-14. Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics conducted 282 COVID-19 tests over its most recent testing period with no positive results.

Generally speaking, Penn State Athletics had been reporting single-digit or low double-digit positive test results over the past several weeks and months although it had a brief spike into the low 20s in late March. That aside, the department had not seen a significant spike in cases since hitting 50 COVID-19 positives over the course of a testing period in the middle of last September.

On at least 12 occasions Penn State had reported a single positive COVID-19 test results among student-athletes. Student-athlete positive test results are rolled into the university’s numbers at-large. Penn State has reported four positive test results over the past seven days according to the university’s COVID-19 dashboard.

Penn State Athletics managed a fairly successful run of play in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic with football playing all scheduled games. Penn State men’s hockey and men’s basketball both saw significant pauses in play while wrestling, women’s basketball and women’s hockey also saw stoppages of note.

Wednesday’s news comes in the wake of just four positive cases of COVID-19 being reported in Centre County, a tie for the second-lowest figure since late August. The state at-large reported just over 1,200 new cases.
