Planet Fitness to Open in Fraser Centre

A Planet Fitness gym is coming soon to downtown State College.

The fitness center franchise has signed a lease for the former H&M location in the Fraser Centre, 118 S. Fraser St., and has begun interior construction work, Gary Brandeis, president of building owner Real Estate Capital Management, confirmed.

Brandeis couldn’t say when the gym will open and a Planet Fitness representative did not yet return a message seeking comment.

It will be the second State College-area Planet Fitness, joining the Nittany Mall location. Planet Fitness opened at the mall in 2014 and added an 8,200-square-foot expansion in 2019.

Planet Fitness is one of the largest fitness center franchises in the nation with more than 2,000 clubs throughout the country.

The Nittany Mall location’s “classic” plan costs $10 a month and gives members unlimited access to the club’s facilities. Members can upgrade to the “Black Card” plan for $23 a month to access any club and receive added perks, including access to the tanning beds and unlimited guest visits. It’s unclear how much the downtown location’s plans will cost, but they figure to be similar.

Planet Fitness’s website lists a pre-grand opening sale for the Fraser Street location as “coming soon.”

One of the Fraser Centre’s inaugural tenants, H&M closed its State College store in September 2021 after five years in business.

Planet Fitness is among a spate of new business openings downtown. Lupita’s, a locally-owned authentic Mexican restaurant, recently opened its third Centre County location at 312 W. Beaver Ave., while Antifragile Brewing Company, the borough’s first brewery, will have a soft opening at the end of this week at 324 E. Calder Way. Poke Fresh, a Hawaiian poke bowl place, is expected to open in the same Calder Way shopping center sometime soon, and Raising Cane’s anticipates a June opening for its first State College restaurant at 228 E. College Ave.
