Rural King, a farm and home department store chain based in Illinois, has signed a lease agreement for the former Sears location at The Nittany Mall and looks to open this upcoming spring.

Nittany Mall General Manager Polly Welch said Rural King signed a long-term lease for the unoccupied 82,944 square feet of space. She said the store will also have seasonal outdoor displays outside of the mall.

“We are very excited to welcome Rural King to the Nittany Mall family,” said Welch. “They are a great addition; I think a perfect addition for this location.”

Welch said the mall and Rural King entered into a lease agreement during the summer of 2018 that stated that Rural King would take over the property on Sept. 1, 2019.

Rural King was founded in Mattoon, Ill., in 1960 and now has more than 110 stores in a 13-state area that includes Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia.

The closest Rural King to the coming State College store opened in Clearfield in 2016.

The store sells a variety of products such as livestock feed, farm equipment, agricultural parts, lawn mowers, workwear, fashion clothing, house wares and toys, and offers customers a free bag of popcorn and cup coffee while they shop. The company’s website says it prides itself on everyday low prices, along with being the industry leader in product knowledge and customer service.
