Wine and Dine: Find the Perfect Pairing in Happy Valley’s Finer Dining Establishments

Lionne and 1855 Lounge at The Nittany Lion Inn

From cozy bars to fine dining, where wine takes center stage

Last month, I was trying to plan a romantic dinner for my sweetheart and myself for Valentine’s Day. In my planning, I realized that I should probably look a little farther than the establishments where they know my name and have the local beer that I like poured before I sit down at the bar.

Not that I think that our local breweries and dive bars can’t be nice places for romantic dinners, but I know how much my partner loves a nice glass of wine to pair with her meal. Plus, it is good to get out to new places and try new things from time to time.

As for myself, I am still learning the finer things about wine (slow learner, I guess), but it’s fun to taste and pair a wine with an excellent meal prepared by our local chefs (just don’t ask me to tell you too much about the intricate details about the wines of the world. I am still just a novice).

But one thing is for sure, nothing pairs with a fine dining experience like a glass of wine. Luckily for me, (for all of us who love good food and great experiences) Centre County has many options where you can pair fine dining with a nice glass of wine. The wonderful staff at these places can help you find a glass (or bottle) that will go well with your meal.

And although this story will come out after Valentine’s Day, it is always a good time to treat yourself and someone you love to a romantic night out (or maybe you just want to treat yourself, a la Parks and Rec). So, let’s take a look at some local places that offer good pairings.

Allen Street Grill

The wine list in the Lobby Bar at the Allen Street Grill is varied, detailed, and deep. Up high on the second floor on the corner of College Avenue and Allen Street, the Allen Street Grill is the perfect setting to enjoy a nice night out. You are sure to find something delicious on the seasonal menu to pair with the perfect pour. I suggest starting at the Lobby Bar for a glass and then enjoy another pour (or two) with dinner.

American Ale House

This longtime gem out in the Toftrees neighborhood has a wide selection of wines from around the globe. The intimate dining experience is highlighted by the piano bar and the lovely seafood options.

Gigi’s Southern Table

As soon as you walk into this local favorite on the west side of town [State College], you will notice the wine wall. Pick a bottle and enjoy it with the southern fare that will be sure to make your mouth happy.

Grace and Stonehouse Pub at Carnegie House

Boasting a selection of more than 800 bottles of wine, the Stonehouse Pub at the Carnegie House offers an intimate setting for any wine lover in the speakeasy. Pair that with the fine-dining menu at the Carnegie House’s Grace Restaurant, and you will likely have an evening to remember.

Lionne and 1855 Lounge at The Nittany Lion Inn

This historic venue is the perfect place for a pour with a little Penn State roar. Lionne is the heart of the inn’s main dining room, offering a menu highlighted by local ingredients paired with a robust wine list. Or enjoy the comfy yet elegant atmosphere at the 1855 Lounge.

Pine Grove Hall/Flour & Stone

These two sister establishments, located right next door to each other, are the place to go for wining and dining in Pine Grove Mills. Pine Grove Hall offers small plates, a beautiful bar, and live music, while at Flour & Stone you will find a farm-to-table menu experience. Both offer an extensive wine list and a great atmosphere.

ReFarm Café at Windswept Farm

It doesn’t get more farm-to-table than being on the farm itself. Servers help the guests pair their meals with selections from the extensive wine list. They offer tasting dinners, and I have yet to experience it all myself, but it is on my Centre County bucket list for sure.

These are just some of the options for wining and dining in Happy Valley, so don’t be afraid to get out and enjoy a glass or bottle with a lovely meal. As for my Valentine’s Day date, like usual, I made reservations a little late (is a week out too late?) and we ended up somewhere where the bartender knows my name and favorite beer. Good thing craft beer pairs well with a good meal too. At least my list above gives a head start for the next date night. Cheers! T&G
