Despite the frigid temperatures, thousands of people took to the streets of downtown State College on New Year’s Eve to marvel at ice sculptures, take in shows, and write down their resolutions for 2014.

According to police, a man who was said to be drunk got into a fight with family members. The man threatened to kill himself and anyone who tried to interfere, before holing up in his bedroom.

The snow may make travel hazardous, with visibility rapidly dropping to one half mile of less. Gusty winds up to 40 mph will make it even harder to see.

As part of a gas pipeline installation project, Porter Road will be closed until around Jan. 10, according to Columbia Gas Spokesman Russ Beddell.

“Even if you’re not a runner, it’s a good time to come out on First Night to see people in costumes,” says First Night Executive Director Rick Bryant. Get ups range from cow costumes to tuxedos to firefighter gear to swim wear. “You just see everything imaginable,” says Bryant.
