STATE COLLEGE — The Central Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association, in affiliation with the Penn State School of Music and with a grant from Centre Foundation, recently held the 34th Phyllis Triolo Music Competition. The for talented musicians in two divisions: The Junior Division (grades 6-8) and the Senior Division (grades 9-12).
The competition for students from central Pennsylvania is made up of a junior division for those in sixth through eighth grades and a senior division for those in ninth through 12th grades. Junior division winners were: Gail Szczepkowski, violin, of Ellysburg, first prize; Audrey Shu, piano, of State College, second prize; and Matthew Chen, piano, of Lewisburg, and Daniel Xu, violin, of State College, both honorable mention.
Other contestants in the junior division were Michele Zhang, harp; Evie Zhang, piano; Mary Lecskowicz, French horn; and Jerry Zhang, piano.
In the senior division, winners were: Ellie Kim, piano, of State College, first prize; Benjamin Deighton, cello, of State College, second prize; Benjamin Curtin, piano, of State College, third prize; and Rachel Zimmerman, violin, of State College, honorable mention.
Other contestants in the senior division were Adam Schultz, piano; Carolyn Barr, piano; Yuki Yoshida, piano; Jasmine Cao, piano; and Keya Ahrestani, voice.
