After closing its South Atherton Street storefront in June, a local women’s clothing and accessories boutique has found a new home in downtown State College.

By A Thread is targeting an early September opening for its new location at 210 S. Allen St., owner Emily Boone wrote in a social media post on Friday. The space was previously home to Custom Shoe Repair, which quietly closed in May after six decades in business.

“A fresh space. A fresh chapter. The same boutique you know and love,” Boone wrote. “We’ve been quietly working to bring our vision to life and we’re counting down the days until we welcome you in.”

Boone previously announced in June that she was closing By A Thread’s storefront at 1341 S. Atherton St. and for the time being would focus on online sales, citing the “uncertainty of committing to another long-term lease while also stepping into a season of wanting to grow our family.”

But at the time she also stressed it was the start of a new chapter for the business, and that she planned to have a physical store again in the future.

By A Thread’s first location opened in 2020 on High Street in Bellefonte and later moved to West Bishop Street. In 2024, Boone moved the shop to its location in the plaza on South Atherton Street, saying at the time that the State College storefront provided more space and visibility, as well as easier access and parking for customers.

In addition to a selection of clothing and accessories that prioritizes quality over quantity, By A Thread has offered a pour-your-own candle bar and has hosted workshops, in-store events and pop-ups with other small businesses.

Boone wrote that she plans to share “sneak peeks, progress, and plenty of behind-the-scenes moments” on social media as the store prepares for its reopening.

“We’re back… and we think you’re going to love what’s next,” she wrote.
