Spring Creek Chapter Trout Unlimited will welcome community members of all ages to the 10th Annual Family Fishing Picnic from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, at Tussey Mountain Pond.

The free, family-friendly event offers a fun-filled afternoon of fishing, outdoor activities and environmental education. ClearWater Conservancy is a partner and supporter of the event.

“This event is about more than fishing,” Judi Sittler, SCCTU Youth Outreach Chair and one of the picnic’s original organizers, said in a statement. “It’s about connecting families with nature, building community and creating lasting memories.”

Highlights Include:

  • Learn-to-fish stations with all equipment provided
  • Fly casting demonstrations
  • Children’s activities and outdoor games
  • Face painting
  • Free picnic lunch with grilled hot dogs and snacks
  • Environmental education stations
  • Centred Outdoors Hike at Galbraith Gap
  • Appearances by Tony the Trout and Brookie
  • Canoe and kayak rides

Fishing gear is provided, no fishing licenses are required and no registration is necessary.

The Centred Outdoors guided outings of Galbraith Gap will be at 1 and 3 p.m. Look for the Centred Outdoors flag near the Family Fishing Picnic access drive off Bear Meadows Road. The hike will be a short walk towards the forest from the Tussey Mountain Pond.

Launched on June 12, 2016 as the “Get Outdoors Family Fishing Picnic” to celebrate and coincide with National Get Outdoors Day, the event originally had approximately 300 people in attendance at the Tussey Mountain pond. Since then, it has grown in scope and added a Centred Outdoors hike as part of the program.

The Family Fishing Picnic now draws up to 400 guests and 70 volunteers annually.

Funding grants from ClearWater Conservancy, the Foundation for Western Pennsylvania Watersheds and Harris Township, along with donations of time and goods from Tussey Mountain, local businesses and volunteers, allow SCCTU to continue to offer the afternoon of family-oriented activities free of charge to participants.
