AAUW State College awarded scholarships totaling $24,000 to five local women during its annual Award & Scholarship Celebration on June 6.
The recipients are all Penn State students who had their education interrupted due to life circumstances for at least two years, and were now ready to resume their education but without the funds to do so.
Scholarships were awarded to Cassandra Barr (psychology), Cigdem Beggi Alrawi (German), Abigail Deeter (kinesiology), Faith Galbraith (music) and Nivin Shaaban (engineering).
“Long ago, I was a recipient of the AAUW scholarship as an adult learner undergraduate, so it gives me great pleasure to pay it forward in service to the American Association of University Women State College to award these promising young women with a scholarship,” said Leslie Laing, AAUW State College scholarship co-chair and director for Adult Learner Programs and Services at Penn State. “Each of the recipients are striving to complete their undergraduate degrees, juggling multiple roles and beating the odds as they excel academically. Reducing their financial burden and stress goes a long way to enhancing student success.”
