Lunafest, the fundraising film festival dedicated to championing women filmmakers and bringing women together in their communities, will be hosted virtually by Centre Safe during the weekend of April 16.
This is the second time the film festival will be virtual due to the pandemic. While the team at Centre Safe misses holding the event in person with the community, the streaming festival also has its benefits.
“Last year, I bought tickets for my nieces and my daughter who live out of town,” Anne Ard, executive director at Centre Safe, said. “I sent it to them as a gift because these films are always creative and inspiring—often the one that I thought I was going to like the best is second or third on my list and my favorite is a complete surprise.”
Tickets start at $13 for students and $18 for general audiences and can be purchased at centresafe.org/event/lunafest. Each ticket will be entered for a chance to win prizes from local businesses.
The film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through short films by women filmmakers. The films range from fictional drama to documentaries, and cover topics such as women’s health, body image, relationships, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.
A link will be sent in advance to stream the films beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 16 that lasts until 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 18. Films featured in Lunafest are not rated but it is suggested that viewers be 16 years old or older. The seven short films have a total running time of 86 minutes.
All proceeds will benefit Centre Safe and Chicken & Egg Pictures, a nonprofit organization that supports women nonfiction filmmakers. Thus far, Lunafest, which is created and funded by Luna nutrition bars, has raised more than $6 million for nonprofit organizations across the U.S. and Canada.
Centre Safe, formerly The Centre County Women’s Resource Center, provides services to survivors of sexual violence, dating or domestic violence and stalking. Centre Safe’s mission is to empower survivors and eliminate violence.
