Local residents can get free flu shots for themselves and low-cost vaccines and microchips for their pets at a community health clinic this weekend.
State Rep. Paul Takac, D-College Township, is partnering with Centre County PAWS and several Penn State programs to host the People, PAWS and PSU health clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Centre County PAWS, located at 1401 Trout Road.
The event will offer health services for people alongside veterinary services for cats and dogs. Centre County PAWS will provide low-cost vaccines and microchips for pets, including rabies, distemper and kennel cough vaccines.
Penn State’s LION Mobile Clinic, School of Nursing and College of Agricultural Sciences will provide free flu vaccines for people and information about ticks and tick-borne diseases. Takac’s office will also be available at the event to help residents connect with state government resources and services.
The event is intended to make basic health and animal-care services more accessible while bringing several local organizations together in one location. Organizers plan to have giveaways for both people and pets.
“We’re excited to once again bring together these great community partners to provide resources and services for both people and their pets,” Mary Elliott, event coordinator for Takac, said. “Events like this are a great opportunity to make health and animal-care resources more accessible to our neighbors while also connecting them with information and services available through the state.”
Pet owners should come prepared to keep their animals under control during the event. Cats must be transported in carriers, while dogs must remain on fixed-length leashes.
Organizers are asking attendees to be mindful of other people and animals at the clinic and to expect some patience as services are coordinated throughout the afternoon.
Residents with questions can contact Takac’s office at 814-308-0569 or RepTakac@pahouse.net, or visit his website.
More information about the participating organizations is available through Centre County PAWS and Penn State’s Lion Mobile Clinic.
