CENTRE HALL — The Constitution Day Centre Celebration will honor the U.S. Constitution’s 231st anniversary from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Grange Park, Gate 1.
Admission and parking for the event are free.
“Essentially, we are bringing a live Constitution to the community and encouraging a better understanding of our Constitution and how it affects our daily lives,” said Keith Bierly, president of the nonprofit Constitution Day Centre Hall Inc.
“There will be over 40 exhibits by individuals and groups that will interact with visitors. Plus, there will be live music, speakers, food vendors and free Constitutions and birthday cake,’ said Bierly. ‘Our main goal is to educate and entertain the people of Central Pennsylvania.”
Constitution Village will be open 1 to 4:30 p.m. Among the new exhibitors are the Penn State Law Veterans and Servicemembers Legal Clinic, Centre County Commissioners, Centre County Women’s Resource Center, Penn State’s McCourtney Institute for Democracy, Penn State’s ‘Remembering 1968’ project, U.S. naval historian James Bloom and the Penn State Law Intellectual Property Clinic. Guy Graybill, of Middleburg, author of books on a central Pennsylvania bootlegger and the alcohol industry, will host an exhibit on the Prohibition amendments.
Returning exhibitors include Fair Districts of Centre County, League of Women Voters of Centre County, retired Centre County sheriff Denny Nau, retired County warden David Immel, Interfaith Initiative, Ni-ta-nee NOW, Women’s Suffragette History, Centre LGBTQA Network, Libertarians of Centre County and more.
The full schedule includes live music by Jackie Brown and the Gill Street Band, Cone of Silence, Elton John impersonator Tommy Thompson and Big Daddy Bangers. Speakers of local, state and national recognition are invited.
“President John F. Kennedy said in his inaugural address that ‘civility is not a sign of weakness,’” Bierly said. “It is important that our Constitution, the foundation of our democratic form of government, be discussed in a civil and bipartisan manner.”
