Update: A block party originally scheduled for Aug. 2 has been updated due to weather concerns. This story has been updated to reflect the change.

A series of summer block party-style events in August will benefit the education and innovation efforts of a Centre Region nonprofit.

Block Party Fridays will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 9 and 16 at youth science center Discovery Space and its makerspace for teens and adults, The Rivet, both located at 1224 N. Atherton St., State College. A block party originally scheduled for Aug. 2 has been canceled due to weather concerns.

Both events will feature live music, local food trucks, mocktails and giant lawn games. Community members can bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the summer evening.

“Each Block Party will showcase a different live music act, offering a fresh experience every Friday night,” Maria Barton, director of strategic initiatives for Discovery Space and The Rivet, said. “It’s a perfect blend of enjoying live music, food, and games while supporting our mission to promote education and innovation.”

The Discovery Space exhibit floor will be open for exploration, and the maker market will feature handmade goods from Rivet members and local artisans.

“Being part of the Maker Booth at Block Party Fridays is an incredible opportunity to sell my pottery for the first time,” Kat Stupar, a maker member at The Rivet, said in a press release. “I’m proud to be a part of the amazing community of makers at The Rivet, and it’s always a joy to bring my loved ones to experience this special place. I’m excited to see everyone come together and have fun.”

Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door for adults, $5 for children ages 3 to 12 and free for kids under the age of 3. Discovery Space and The Rivet members can bring a friend and get 50% off admission at the door.

Proceeds will benefit the mission of Discovery Space and The Rivet to provide engaging STEM experiences and skill-based education for learners of all ages, support rural outreach and foster workforce development and entrepreneurial initiatives.

Limited parking is available on site at Discovery Space and The Rivet. To ensure accessibility for those with mobility issues or disabilities, the organization asks that able-bodied attendees park at Radio Park Elementary School, 800 W. Cherry Lane if possible.
