Colder temperatures and a boost from the region’s first snowfall of the winter mean good news for local skiers and snowboarders.

Tussey Mountain will open its slopes for the first time this winter from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7. At least one beginner and one intermediate slope will be open for skiing and snowboarding, according to a post on the Boalsburg ski and recreation area’s Facebook page.

“Our snowmaking efforts over the past two nights have allowed us to get a base down so that our lifts can start spinning from 9am-5pm,” the post stated. “We will have Little Bear and Utah open for sure, and everything else will be determined after the snow settles on Saturday.”

Lift tickets, rentals and lessons can be purchased in advance online. New this year, Tussey Mountain will offer scannable RFID card instead of lift tickets.

The remodeled Tussey Bar & Kitchen also will be open from 3 to 10 p.m.

With the potential for rain in the forecast early in the week, no determination has been made yet on days and hours for weekday skiing and snowboarding.

After a mild winter to date, Tussey is opening the slopes a bit later than a year ago, when they opened on Christmas Eve 2022.
