Centre County Adds 2 COVID-19 Deaths, 88 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 7,246 New Positives

Centre County recorded two new COVID-19 deaths and 88 more cases of the virus on Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county has now had 326 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since March 2020. The new cases bring the county’s total to 33,604 (29,914 confirmed and 3,690 probable).

Centre County’s moving seven-day average for new cases is is 120, down from 211 a week ago and 244 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported 7,246 new COVID-19 positives on Thursday to bring the statewide total to 2,681,717.

It was the fifth consecutive day with fewer than 10,000 new cases statewide. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 8,512, down from 14,078 a week ago and 21,217 two weeks ago. 

With 171 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 41,199.

Hospitalizations

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 44 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, with four in intensive care [-1] and two on ventilators.

Mount Nittany Medical Center did not yet update its COVID inpatient dashboard with information about patient ages and vaccination status as of 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations continued to decline. According to DOH, 4,155 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 162 fewer than on Wednesday, with 684 patients in intensive care [-28] and 445 on ventilators [-8].

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County recorded five new COVID-19 cases among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 749 resident cases, 726 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 22 active COVID-19 cases among inmates, two more than on Wednesday, and 15 among staff.

Rockview state prison has 24 active inmate cases and 18 among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,479 inmates are fully vaccinated, 13 are partially vaccinated and 193 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated and 318 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,704 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 341 are fully vaccinated and 376 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 93,155 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 58 since Wednesday, and 14,038 are partially covered [-8]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,362 county residents [+93].

Among the county’s entire population, 68.6% have received at least one dose, 58.4% are fully vaccinated and 49.6% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 73.9% have received at least one dose, 62.6% are fully vaccinated and 52.2% have received a booster.

Statewide, 75.7% of adults and 65.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
