Centre County Adds 24 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 1,272 New Positives

Centre County recorded 24 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday while Pennsylvania had its largest statewide single-day increase since Feb. 26

The new cases bring the county’s total to 35,245 (31,286 confirmed and 3,959 probable), according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 17.1, up from 8.7 a week ago and its highest average since March 6.

Pennsylvania registered more than 1,000 new cases for the fourth time in six days. The 1,272 new infections bring the statewide total to 2,791,018.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 917, up from 661 a week ago and the highest since March 10.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has three COVID-19 inpatients, unchanged from Monday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators, according to the hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard.

Statewide, Pennsylvania hospitals saw their largest increase in COVID inpatients since January, though ICU and ventilator patients declined. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 432 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized across the commonwealth, 21 more than on Monday, with 59 in intensive care [-2] and 38 on ventilators [-8].
Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus, keeping the total at 348.

With 17 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,442.

Community level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the fifth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.

Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates, and one each among staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

At Benner, 1,393 inmates are fully vaccinated, 20 are partially vaccinated and 194 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated and 319 are not vaccinated.

At Rockview, 1,712 inmates are fully vaccinated, three are partially vaccinated and 83 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 352 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 366 are not vaccinated [-1].

Vaccinations

As of Tuesday morning, 95,042 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 34 since Monday, and 14,223 are partially covered [-10]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,156 county residents [+32].

Among the county’s entire population, 70% have received at least one dose, 59.6% are fully vaccinated and 51.5% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.4% have received at least one dose, 63.7% are fully vaccinated and 54.1% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.4% of adults and 67.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
