Centre County Adds 28 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Tops 2,000 New Positives for First Time in 7 Weeks

Centre County recorded 28 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, while Pennsylvania registered more than 2,000 new infections for the first time since Feb. 26, according to Department of Health data.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 35,388 (31,398 confirmed and 3,990 probable) since March 2020. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 20.4, up from 17.3 a week ago and 12 a month ago .

Statewide, the 2,018 new positives increase Pennsylvania’s total to 2,800,317. The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,317, up from 938 a week ago and the highest average since March 1.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has four COVID-19 inpatients, one more than on Monday. None are in intensive care or on ventilators, according to the hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard.

COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide increased for the third consecutive day. Pennsylvania hospitals have 500 COVID-19 patients, 21 more than on Monday, with 61 in intensive care [+7] and 31 on ventilators [+4].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the ninth consecutive day, keeping the total at 348.

With 51 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is 44,539.

Community Level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.

Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Benner has one among staff and Rockview has none.

At Benner, 1,409 inmates are fully vaccinated, 14 are partially vaccinated and 196 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated [-4] and 323 are not vaccinated [+4].

At Rockview, 1,709 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 80 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 351 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 367 are not vaccinated [+1].

Vaccinations

As of Tuesday morning, 95,206 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 25 since Monday, and 14,230 are partially covered [-3]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,345 county residents [+25].

Among the county’s entire population, 70.2% have received at least one dose, 59.7% are fully vaccinated and 51.6% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.5% have received at least one dose, 63.8% are fully vaccinated and 54.3% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.6% of adults and 68.1% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
