Centre County Adds 35 COVID-19 Cases; Hospitalizations Reach 5-Month Low

Centre County recorded 35 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday to increase its total to 34,337, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Among total cases, 30,538 are confirmed and 3,799 are probable.

Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 48, down from 69 a week ago and 139 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported 2,578 new COVID-19 positives to bring the statewide total to 2,731,855.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 3,289, down from 4,908 a week ago and 9,861 two weeks ago.

Hospitalizations

COVID-19 hospitalizations at Mount Nittany Medical Center reached their lowest level since mid-September on Wednesday. The hospital has 22 COVID-19 inpatients, two fewer than on Tuesday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators for the third consecutive day.

The patients range in age from 49 to 100, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eleven are fully vaccinated and 11 are not vaccinated.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Sept. 18. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 2,362 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 155 fewer than on Tuesday, with 410 patients in intensive care [-18] and 249 on ventilators [-16].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 333.

With 109 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 42,533.

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported two new COVID-19 cases among residents. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 771 resident cases, 741 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 13 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 12 among staff, two more than on Tuesday.

Rockview state prison has one active inmate case [-1] and three among staff [-1].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,469 inmates are fully vaccinated, 17 are partially vaccinated and 190 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 318 are not vaccinated [+1].

Rockview has 1,705 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 62 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 346 are fully vaccinated and 371 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Statewide, 65 of 67 counties are at the high level, with Sullivan and Northampton counties listed as substantial, the second highest level on the CDC scale.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Wednesday morning, 93,725 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 46 since Tuesday, and 14,001 are partially covered [-3]. Booster doses have been administered to 48,059county residents [+62].

Among the county’s entire population, 69% have received at least one dose, 58.8% are fully vaccinated and 50.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.3% have received at least one dose, 62.9% are fully vaccinated and 52.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.2% of adults and 66.6% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
