Centre County Adds 4 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 545 New Positives

Centre County on Tuesday recorded a single-digit COVID-19 case increase for the third consecutive day and the 11th time in the last month.

The four new cases bring the county’s total to 34,996 (31,082 confirmed and 3,914 probable). Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is nine, according to DOH, down from 10 a week ago and 38 a month ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 1,000 new positives for the 11th time in 12 days. The 545 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,775,728.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 641, down from 780 a week ago and 2,404 a month ago. The average is Pennsylvania’s lowest since July 25.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has three COVID-19 inpatients, one fewer than on Monday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators. Local hospitalizations continue to be at their lowest level since mid-July.

The patients range in age from 59 to 65, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Two are fully vaccinated and one is not vaccinated

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations fell below 600 for the first time since Aug. 4. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 598 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 13 fewer than on Monday, with 91 in intensive care [-5] and 54 on ventilators [+2].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the seventh consecutive day, keeping the total at 646.

With 41 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,091.

Community level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the second consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.

Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 66 of 67 counties are at the low level, with only Crawford County at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Rockview state prison has no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

Centre County’s other state prison, Benner, has one case among inmates [+1] and one among staff [-1].

At Benner, 1,415 inmates are fully vaccinated, 17 are partially vaccinated and 200 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 314 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 314 are not vaccinated [-1].

Rockview has 1,720 inmates who are fully vaccinated, three who are partially vaccinated and 81 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 347 are fully vaccinated [-4] and 370 are not vaccinated [+4].

Vaccinations

DOH did not update vaccination numbers on Tuesday. As of Monday, 94,585 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 14,162 are partially covered. Booster doses have been administered to 49,507 county residents

Among the county’s entire population, 69.7% have received at least one dose, 59.3% are fully vaccinated and 51.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75% have received at least one dose, 63.4% are fully vaccinated and 53.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.9% of adults and 67.4% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
