Centre County recorded 48 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday and hospitalizations continued on a downward trend locally and statewide.
The new cases bring Centre County’s total to 34,385 (30,572 confirmed and 3,813 probable), according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 45, down from 66 a week ago and 120 two weeks ago.
Pennsylvania reported 3,718 new COVID-19 positives to bring the statewide total to 2,735,573.
The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 3,159, down from 4,534 a week ago and 8,512 two weeks ago.
Hospitalizations
COVID-19 hospitalizations at Mount Nittany Medical Center continue to be at the lowest level since mid-September. The hospital has 21 COVID-19 inpatients, one fewer than on Wednesday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators for the fourth consecutive day.
The patients range in age from 49 to 100, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eleven are fully vaccinated and 10 are not vaccinated.
Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Sept. 13. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 2,264 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 98 fewer than on Wednesday, with 409 patients in intensive care [-1] and 248 on ventilators [-1].
Deaths
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 333.
With 84 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 42,617.
According to a DOH data update on Wednesday, unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated individuals accounted for 83% of COVID-19 hospitalizations, 80% of COVID-19 deaths and 71% of cases in Pennsylvania between January 2021 and Feb. 11.
Nursing and personal care home cases
Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported five new COVID-19 cases among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 770 resident cases, 746 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.
Prison cases
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 13 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 11 among staff, one fewer than on Wednesday.
Rockview state prison has one active inmate case and three among staff.
Both facilities are in Benner Township.
At Benner, 1,467 inmates are fully vaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated and 192 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 313 are fully vaccinated [+3] and 315 are not vaccinated [-3].
Rockview has 1,703 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 63 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 346 are fully vaccinated and 371 are not vaccinated.
Transmission level
All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update on Thursday.
Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.
Vaccinations
As of Thursday morning, 93,806 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 81 since Wednesday, and 14,041 are partially covered [+40]. Booster doses have been administered to 48,186 county residents [+127].
Among the county’s entire population, 69.1% have received at least one dose, 58.8% are fully vaccinated and 50.2% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.4% have received at least one dose, 63% are fully vaccinated and 52.8% have received a booster.
Statewide, 76.2% of adults and 66.6% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
