Centre County Adds 8 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 958 New Positives

Centre County recorded eight new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, marking its fourth single-digit increase in the last five days.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 35,019 (31,101 confirmed and 3,918 probable) since March 2020, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is nine, according to DOH, down from 11 a week ago and 36 a month ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 1,000 new positives for the 13th time in 14 days. The 958 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,777,260.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 599, down from 761 a week ago and 2,092 a month ago.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has four COVID-19 inpatients, one fewer than on Wednesday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped to their lowest level since Aug. 2. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 543 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 27 fewer than on Wednesday, with 92 in intensive care [-7] and 50 on ventilators [-3].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the ninth consecutive day, keeping the total at 346.

With 37 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,152.

Community level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the second consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s most recent update on March 17.

Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 66 of 67 counties are at the low level, with only Crawford County at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Rockview state prison has no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

Centre County’s other state prison, Benner, has one case among inmates and one among staff.

At Benner, 1,424 inmates are fully vaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated and 203 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 314 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 314 are not vaccinated [-1].

Rockview has 1,716 inmates who are fully vaccinated, three who are partially vaccinated and 79 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 348 are fully vaccinated and 369 are not vaccinated.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 94,643 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 22 since Wednesday, and 14,177 are partially covered [+6]. Booster doses have been administered to 49,598 county residents [+32]

Among the county’s entire population, 69.7% have received at least one dose, 59.3% are fully vaccinated and 51.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75% have received at least one dose, 63.4% are fully vaccinated and 53.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.9% of adults and 67.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
