5 People Injured in Head-On Crash That Closed Part of Route 144

Five people were injured in a Saturday night crash that closed Route 144 at Centre Hall Mountain for more than four and a half hours, according to Spring Township police.

Four of the patients had to be taken to hospitals outside of Centre County.

A Pleasant Gap man driving a vehicle identified by police as Unit 1 crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic and struck Unit 2 head on at about 8:05 p.m. near the intersection of Route 144 and Lower Greens Valley Road, according to a preliminary investigation.

The driver of Unit 1 was flown by helicopter to UPMC Altoona. His passenger was uninjured, police wrote in a release on Sunday.

The driver and three passengers in Unit 2 were initially taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center. One was later flown to a Pittsburgh hospital and two were taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, one by airlift and the other by ambulance. The fourth patient from Unit 2 was treated at Mount Nittany and released.

Conditions of the patients were not released.

Centre Hall Mountain was closed until about 12:45 a.m. on Sunday.
