AccuWeather Founder Joel Myers Named to Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame

Joel Myers, the founder and executive chair of State College-based AccuWeather, will be honored for his pioneering career when he is inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame next month.

Considered the father of modern commercial meteorology, Myers will be honored at a gala ceremony on Sept. 29 in New York alongside figures such as Bravo’s Andy Cohen, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Food Network’s Bobby Flay and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

The hall of fame called Myers a “visionary entrepreneur” and “the nation’s most respected authority on the business of weather.”

Myers founded AccuWeather as a Penn State meteorology graduate student in 1962 and served as its CEO for more than 60 years, building the company into a global leader in weather data, forecasting and warnings. The company now provides services for more than half of the Fortune 500 companies and reaches over a billion people worldwide through AccuWeather.com, the AccuWeather Network and the AccuWeather app, as well as forecasts and information on radio, television, newspapers, cable and streaming platforms. 

“Dr. Myers pioneered more accurate, more detailed and better communication of weather forecasts and warnings, making forecasts more effective and valuable in saving over 12,000 lives,” the hall of fame wrote in a news release.

With his induction into the hall, Myers will join nearly 500 executives, personalities and programs that have shaped the media industry, such as Oprah Winfrey, Walter Cronkite, Johnny Carson and Al Roker.
