All Seven School-Board Contenders Find Support in State College Area

All seven primary candidates for State College school board won spots Tuesday on the November general-election ballot, unofficial results show.

If preliminary vote-count tallies are confirmed, incumbent board members Ann McGlaughlin, Jim Pawelczyk and Dorothea Stahl, along with challengers Dave Cannon, Amber Cistaro Concepcion, Samuel Settle and Laurel Zydney, will appear on that November ballot.

All the candidates cross-filed to appear on both major parties’ primary ballots.

The unofficial counts completed Tuesday night show McGlaughlin, the board president, won the most votes among Republican voters (2,666). She and Pawelczyk (2,589 votes), Cannon (2,367), Stahl (2,238) and Settle (1,902) appear set to be the Republican nominees in the general election.

Stahl, Pawelczyk and McGlaughlin also won enough Democrats’ votes to double as Democratic nominees in the general election, the preliminary results show. They show Stahl logged 2,446 Democratic votes; McGlaughlin, 1,996; and Pawelczyk, 1,846.

But the top vote-getters among Democratic voters were Concepcion, with 2,935 votes, and Zydney, with 2,801 votes, the unofficial tallies indicate. Concepcion and Zydney appear bound to round out the field of Democratic nominees on the general-election ballot.

Five of the nine State College school-board seats are in play this year. Two of the sitting board members whose terms will expire in January 2012 — Richard Bartnik and Chris Small — are not seeking reelection. Board seats are unpaid positions.
