Author to Discuss Book Sharing His Story Through the Eyes of His Guide Dog

At the age of 21, Matthew VanFossan became blind due to complications with his eyes that he had had since birth. In his book, ‘Through Gilly’s Eyes: Memoirs of a Guide Dog,’ VanFossan writes about the challenges and opportunities he faced as seen through the eyes of his first guide dog, Guildenstern.

VanFossan, who lives in California, will be visiting Schlow Centre Region Library from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Downsbrough Community Room. The free event is sponsored by the Schlow Library Foundation. VanFossan will discuss his book and his life, and a book signing will follow his presentation. 

Through Gilly’s Eyes “provides a running commentary on VanFossan’s progress. And as Gilly and VanFossan learn to work together, the two gradually form a relationship that transcends the ordinary bonds between dog and man. From dog training school then back to college, from home and on to Brazil, Gilly relates their story with humor and insight. Through VanFossan’s challenging adventures, new friendships, and, ultimately, lasting love, Gilly provides him with guidance and companionship for six years — a lifetime that will last forever.”
