Avoid Halloween Scares With These Safety Tips

The bewitching hour is nearly at hand with Trick-or Treat night set for Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

It’s an especially exciting time for kids — running around and collecting all that candy. But sometimes lost in the fun are the potential dangers.

These simple precautions can help keep your kids safe on Halloween:

• Drivers should remember to slow down. Kids will be everywhere and you never know when a child might dart into the street. Children should walk — not run — and stay on the sidewalk.

• Make it easy for kids to be seen by adding reflective tape or stickers to costumes and bags. If possible choose costumes that include light colors. Give kids glow sticks or flashlights to help them become more visible.

• Make sure costumes are the right size to prevent trips and falls. If kids carry fake swords or knives be sure they are soft and flexible to help prevent injuries.

• Be sure to choose costumes that are flame resistant. That includes masks, fake beards and wigs.

• Masks can sometimes obstruct a child’s vision. As an alternative, use non-toxic face paint and makeup.

• Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision.

• After trick-or-treating, adults should check their children’s candy to make sure there is no evidence of tampering.
