State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Bellefonte) and Sen. Cris Dush (R-Pine Creek Township) will host a shredding event for Centre County residents from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority, 253 Transfer Road, Bellefonte.
“When you simply throw old tax returns or paperwork containing your personal information out with the trash, you run the risk of having your identity stolen,” Benninghoff said in a news release. “Events like the one Sen. Dush and I are hosting offer you a free opportunity to safely dispose of your valuable belongings.”
Residents who want to dispose of paper items should place them inside a container such as a box or paper bag in the trunk or truck bed of their vehicles . CCRRA employees will unload the paper, shred it on-site and then treat it to be reused.
“Identity theft can lead to financial losses, damage to your credit score, and other serious problems,” Dush said. “Thieves can open new accounts, make unauthorized purchases, steal your tax refund and even impersonate you in legal situations.”
Cans of non-perishable items will be collected and distributed to local food banks for anyone who wishes to contribute.
